After living in a city where the outskirts are known widely as "wine country," St. Louis native and wine lover, Angela Ortmann, has returned to the Gateway City and is making quite a buzz. She has been hosting wine parties all over the city at restaurants and for individuals and helping people start down the oenophile path.

Tower Grove Farmers' Market Turns Into An Urban Country Fair
The Tower Grove Farmers' Market isn't your typical Farmers' Market. Every Saturday plopped in the center of South City's Tower Grove Park you will find the expected pop-up tents filled with fresh produce and baked goods, but mixed among the produce tents you will also find free yoga classes, live music and sizzling fresh crepes.

St. Louis Family Life Is About More Than Being a Mom
Their motto is "just because you have kids, that's no reason to lose your cool," and St. Louis bloggers and mothers Kristie Steinlage and Lisa Bertrand founded the site STL Family Life with a mission to prove to St. Louis parents that 'not loosing your cool' isn't just about keeping your temper in check.
While most websites targeted at parents are filled with potty-training tips or advice on picking the perfect preschool, Kristie and Lisa have created an online magazine for parents that understands that while being a parent is a full-time job, there is more to family life than diapers and strollers. Lisa explained, "We found that when it came to parenting there were a lot of great sites out there devoted to childcare only. There wasn't really much in the way of parental support. For example, we talk about how parenting affects friendships, marriage, sex, and the other aspects of one's life."
STL Family Life launched on June 8, and since their launch Lisa and Kristie have packed their site full of relationship advice, product giveaways and information about St. Louis' family friendly attractions. In just three short months they have developed a loyal following and plan to add more features and topics as the site grows. Lisa said, "We hope to have a sex column at some point. We hope to tackle career issues, more health issues, more reviews of fun places for families and for date nights, and more content for single parents as well as parents of blended families."
You can check out the newest local website dedicated to balancing parenting with all of life's other bits, by going to STLFamilyLife.com. If you like what you see, you can also follow their updates on Twitter at Twitter.com/stlfamiylife, and become a fan of STL Family Life on Facebook to get updates about their latest contests and content.

Local Business Blogging Is Hard
One of the first things we learned in blogger boot camp was the importance of writing regularly. As a small business, this is the most challenging aspect of social media, as busy times of the year take over, and we just let the blog go, because we have clients to work with. Now, this is most assuredly not a post about us not writing - that's one of the big no-no's. You can't write a post about not writing posts, but what you do when you ran out of time to write?
Turns out that's okay. While we are supposed to be writing regularly, Jim has assured us that blogging is secondary to work. We just have to commit to writing when we can, and making sure it is interesting when we do. To make that easier, we'll be adding pictures, and video, and Twitter and Facebook - building a complete social media profile, and keeping it active.
This blog has been mostly about plastic surgery, but we know plastic surgery - what we're learning is the importance of marketing and branding and online internet type communication. More and more of our customers are typing in "Renaissance Plastic Surgery" or Dr. Mills, or even keywords to specific plastic surgery procedures before they ever pick up the phone, and that means we have to do a better job of writing about you, and your wants, and our business, and business in general.
Our doctors are great people. Really, truly, they are, and our goal is to make sure you get us, and our place in St Louis and St Charles. We're going to do our best to reach out in this blog to other blogs, bringing you not only cosmetic surgery procedures, but tips about what it takes to run a small business.

Urban Review Made The A-List
I just received the July 2008 issue of St. Louis Magazine in my mailbox and was thrilled to see one of my favorite St. Louis bloggers made the A-List........
"No one but urban gadfly Steve Patterson could write 50-plus blog posts about the McDonald’s on Grand, much less make said posts so completely compelling that we’ve clicked through them for hours on end (in our spare time, of course). The real-estate guru of Urban Review STL has written volumes about everything from farmers’ markets to building permits, scooters to city politics, averaging 28 posts per month across his blog’s 56 categories — and scarcely slowing down to acknowledge his disabling stroke this February. Honestly, we’re in awe."
This is a big deal for Steve, who has been blogging for almost 4 years. He loves to put his thoughts out there for his readers and inevitably the discussion begins. Whether it be about how we can make lasting changes to our city or how to use our resources wisely, Steve takes a critical look at urban planning and related politics in the City of St. Louis and region.
A big congrats to Steve at being named "best blogger" in St. Louis, urbanity and city living never looked so good!

Natural Disaster Can Keep You Out Of Debt
"Saint Louis has become Little Las Vegas on Mississippi, with six major casinos in the area." At least that is the opinion of Strangetastes over at the St. Louis Daily Photo Blog says and I would have to agree.
In his most recent post regarding the rising flood waters of the Mississippi River, Strangetastes notes a picture of the President Casino and how this natural disaster has kept some of his clients debt free.........
"I think it's horrifying, the stupidest, laziest, most regressive way the states can raise money. New casinos result in a notable rise in bankruptcies. My bipolar clients just can't handle them. Here, however, we have an effective method of silencing the giant sucking sound on the region's wallets. Even a flood can do some good."
Now that flood waters are dropping who knows when the casinos will be back up and running away with folks hard earned money. But for now: "nobody is always a winner"!

Stories From The World's Children
"Communication is one of the most important skills anyone can have, in business and in life. As individuals and as a species, I believe we will be happier and more productive if we can improve our ability to communicate."
This quote comes from St. Louis blogger David Gray, in his effort to convey the importance of communication in his blog, Communication Nation.
Communication does not begin with adults. It begins when we equip our children to express themselves in a functional and productive manner. An example of this is the World Fit For Us project in which children express their views regarding the world in which we live.....
Topics include Aids, poverty, environment, war, education and more, all from a child's perspective. The booklet brings to life, in a colorful and creative way, some of the very serious issues that our world faces. It can be downloaded here.

The Art of Sword Swallowing
I have seen some pretty strange things in my life but sword swallowing has got to be one of the most creepy and yet cool forms of art I have ever seen.
According to Not So Deep Thoughts, there is a fascinating Q&A with trivia on the Art of Sword Swallowing.......
"Swallowing food involves a series of muscle contractions, both voluntary and involuntary. Swallowing a sword requires no actual swallowing, but the complete opposite: the deliberate relaxation of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract."
Say no more! I can feel the gagging reflex kick in. Still though, it is intriguing and if you're interested in adding the title of “blade glommer” or “steel slurper” to your resume, Classes are offered here.

Yard Work
I've mentioned on Twitter, several times that I love to weed eat, or in other words, weed wack. Why? Up until now, I was not sure what it was about it that makes me love it so, until I read Ted Wight's post about going to The Farm........
"The fulfilling thing about doing work at the farm is the weeds are bigger and the house gets dirtier....so when you are finished you really feel like you have accomplished something."
That's it! It makes me feel like I have really accomplished something. As a mother of four, I can tell you, the laundry never gets totally done, the house is never totally clean and the dishes.....well, let's just say their are always dirty dishes. But when it comes to the yard......there's nothing more fulfilling than mowing and gardening and the feeling of pride for a yard well done.
