Gumbo Flats, Here I Come!
After running a short 5k race in New Town, St. Charles last weekend and finishing in 28 mins, I quickly realized I must be doing something wrong in preparing for these short races. Now... I understand the odds are stacked against me considering I'm 5'2 (on a good day) and my poor little legs can only stride so far... however after reading an article about the Psychology in Exercise...I have finally found the secret to my problem!
In the article, The Power of Positivity, a performance specialist, Dan Schaefer, Ph.D., mentions "The brain can only hold three thoughts at the same time while running". So while running, what he's saying is to think and feel the most positive, important thoughts, which in turn will keep me motivated and I'll ultimately finish my race with a positive attitude. Humm...
So as I reflect on what went wrong last weekend, here is what I've realized I need to change in my upcoming races. I need to have and maintain a positive attitude and/or thoughts throughout the entire race next time. So really I just need to make some minor changes...From this moment on, I promise to never: #1- Dart off like a speeding bullet when the clocks starts, just because I like to be IN FRONT AT ALL TIMES. I need to realize although I might not be in first place... I'm still doing the best my little short legs can do. #2- I will no longer wish for Angie and Dawn (my running partners) to step into any potholes while they run past me. #3 - and this ONE BURNS ME... I will try my best to stay positive when a 9 year old boy passes me up on mile 2...UGH!!
Ok, I can do this...right?? My next race is approaching fast. Myself and my 2 running partners will be at the 2008 Gumbo Flats Pumpkin Run 10k being held in Chesterfield, Missouri on Saturday, October 25th. In preparation for this race, I am going to incorporate these new training techniques (3 positive thoughts) and really wish for the best. I sure do hope this enhances my run...however as you can see...3 miles in 28 mins...I am open to all suggestions and can use all the help I can get! Wish me luck.

Good Luck Carrie, keep up the positive attitude. I have run several marathons and the biggest preparation is not the countless hours of training, it is the mental part as you hit the wall when you are on the course! One mile at a time, don't concentrate on being first, or being last, focus on how beautiful it is outside, or that you are able to even be out there competing. Enjoy the moment!
